This is the only chocolate cake recipe you'll ever need. The combination of buttermilk and warm coffee creates an incredibly moist crumb that stays fresh for days.

Cake Ingredients

  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) Oil
  • 235ml Buttermilk (1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla essence
  • 215g All-purpose flour
  • 50g (1/2 cup) Cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp Baking powder & 1 tsp Baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) Warm coffee
  • 60g Dark chocolate + 20g Butter (melted)

Chocolate Frosting

  • 130g (3/4 cup) Dark chocolate
  • 65g (1/3 cup) Butter
  • 50g (1/2 cup) Icing sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Cocoa powder
  • 100ml (1/4 cup) Whipping cream

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Dry Mix: Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Wet Mix: In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, oil, buttermilk, and vanilla essence until smooth.
  3. Combine: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  4. The Secret Touch: Stir in the melted chocolate/butter mixture and the warm coffee. The batter will be thin, but that's the secret to the moisture!
  5. Bake: Pour into a greased pan and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 30–35 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.
  6. Frosting: Melt chocolate and butter together. Whisk in icing sugar, cocoa, and whipping cream until smooth and glossy. Spread over the cooled cake.
